Case 1 Before

Case 1 After

Mentoplasty ( 'Chin Implant' )

This procedure is used to increase the projection of the chin in patients who have a small chin. It may sometimes be combined with a rhinoplasty to restore facial proportions and balance.

The operation

A small incision is made under the chin, in the normally existing line. I use this approach as it reduces the incidence of infection. A pocket is created under the skin that is symmetrical on both sides. I use a semi-rigid silicone implant to augment the chin. Sub-mental liposuction can also be performed at the same time, through the same incision if it is felt that this will improve the final appearance.

Anaesthesia

Can easily performed under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is used for the over-anxious patient only.

Hospital stay

This is done as day care surgery, if performed alone.

Risks

Rarely, migration of the implant, if the pocket has been too large.

Post-operative care

Prevention of direct injury in the early post-operative period. Stitches are removed on the 8th -10th day.

What to expect

Swelling after the surgery may apparently be out of proportion to the procedure.

Outcome

Generally rewarding!
